Figures published in the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) state that between 2017/18 there were 144 workers in the UK that were killed in the workplace, people that went to work as normal, and never returned home. A very sobering statistic indeed and one that you would never want to happen to your employees.

Regrettably businesses can treat health & safety as a bit of an afterthought, when really it should be an essential part of your business operations and at the core of everything you do. Think of it like this, if you don’t look after your employees when they’re at work and under your care, then you’re letting them and your business down.

Responsibilities

If you are an employer, it is your legal duty to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of your employees and law states that you must do whatever is reasonable to achieve this.

This means you must protect your workers from anything that may cause them harm, and controlling risks to injury or health in the workplace. This is absolutely not optional, it’s your responsibility!

Penalties

If you don’t comply, it could have very serious consequences for your business. In 2018 more than over 45 companies had a fine of more than £500,000 and fines in excess of £1 million are no longer the exception for the most serious breaches, please don’t ignore the numbers!
